Our Senior Consultant, Emily Sedgley, celebrated her one-year anniversary with Schon&Co this month.
Emily first made the move from in-house comms to the agency world 12 months ago, but has already firmly set her sights on a long-term career in the corporate communications and B2B agency world.
We sat down with Emily to learn more about her time at Schon&Co over the last year and the things she enjoys most about agency life.
How have you found the transition from in-house corporate communications to agency side?
“I was nervous to make the jump into an agency role after having spent just under a decade working in a variety of in-house roles and I was questioning whether I would be the right fit. A year later, I can honestly say that I am so glad I made the move to an agency role (more specifically, to Schon&Co!) and wonder why I didn’t do this sooner!”
“Our clients always say we are the least “agency” type of corporate PR agency on the planet - and I completely agree, and I think this is our strongest USP - we take it as a huge compliment! Coming from a non-agency background, I have been ‘the client’ for a number of years and have a strong understanding of what it is that clients want from their relationship with their agency. At Schon&Co, our clients really value our honesty, transparency and down-to-earth approach and they know that we will always have their best interests at heart even if what we are saying isn't what they want to hear.”
What has been your greatest achievement since joining Schon&Co?
“I’d say my biggest achievement over the past 12 months has been contributing to setting the foundations for the growth and development of the agency, and having a role to play in helping Schon&Co evolve for the future - I am really excited to continue working closely with Jess and the team on shaping the future of Schon&Co over the next few years and continuing to make a positive impact to the team and our clients.”
How has your approach to communications shaped since joining the agency world?
“I’ve loved having the opportunity to explore different types of communication since joining Schon&Co - from developing social and video content through to thought-leadership and corporate narrative work - for a wide range of organisations and sectors, some that I’ve never previously had experience of. Schon&Co is also more than just a traditional corporate and B2B communications agency, and this has allowed me to broaden my thinking when presented with a new client brief, ensuring we communicate to audiences in the most effective way to make a meaningful and lasting impact - we really believe smart comms needs to work harder than traditional media relations.”
“I think working at Schon&Co has given me a great opportunity to explore different communications strategies and tactics for a wide ranging portfolio of clients that previously I wouldn’t have experienced within in-house roles when working solely for one brand.”
When you first joined, you said you were looking forward to working on a wide variety of projects and campaigns, what has been your favourite project to work on so far?
“I’ve really enjoyed the variety of projects that I’ve got stuck into over the last 12 months, but I’d say one of my favourite projects so far would be a content framework that we produced for one of our automotive and tech clients. We were tasked with generating ideas and developing a number of multichannel comms campaigns to execute our clients’ roadmap and bring their business strategy and corporate narrative to life across PR, social, internal communications and events. This was a fantastic opportunity to get stuck into some creative thinking and showcase the breadth of work that we do here at Schon&Co.”
