Welcome to the team Emily!

Emily joins us from the University of Exeter, where she managed the university’s corporate communications and public affairs. We put her in the hot seat to hear what makes her tick.

Huge news at Schon&Co this week - as we welcome comms expert and mum of two Emily Sedgley to our team!

Emily joins Schon&Co from the University of Exeter, where she managed the university’s corporate communications and campaigns as well as public affairs and stakeholder engagement.

Previously, she spent time in both a national supermarket chain and a nationwide logistics network, handling their corporate external and internal communications respectively.

Coming onboard as a Senior Consultant, Emily has a wealth of experience across corporate and B2B communications, a passion for sharp and effective messaging, and always being up for a challenge!

We put her in the hot seat to learn more about what makes her tick.

How have your professional and personal experiences shaped your approach to communications?

“Over the years, and through experiences at the different places I've worked, I've learned to become a bit more direct and have a bit more confidence in my abilities.

“It has been a journey of learning that what I'm recommending is in fact the right thing to do - that I am the communications expert in the room.

“During my career, I’ve also honed my skills to become more direct in my approach, and ultimately a more efficient communicator.”

When it comes to communications, what does ‘good’ look like to you?

“I guess there are three key areas to consider:

Messaging: To me, good communications have clear messaging, which is to the point, impactful and relates to the rest of the organisation and what it stands for.

Content: Content within communications needs to be interesting, accessible and engaging if it’s going to cut through the noise. The very best communications always leave you wanting to find out more!

Channels: Communications that are versatile and can work across multiple channels is also hugely important in today’s industry, where content is consumed across so many platforms. Being able to tell a story via long form writing, video and social media at once is really valuable.”

What company values are most important to you when it comes to an employer?

“Working for an employer who understands the need for employee flexibility is hugely important to me.

“As a mum of two small boys, having an employer who is understanding about personal commitments is a must, and Schon&Co’s flexible-first model works perfectly for this. All employers should have this level of flexibility in my opinion!

“It is also really important for me that a company offers long term career progression where you’re encouraged to build on your role and learn as much as possible.

“I want to work in a company where I can carve out a place for myself for years to come, growing and evolving with the business.”

“I love doing new things and stretching myself. I really like to embrace a challenge and when I’m faced with a new opportunity, think: what can I bring to the table here?”

What are you most looking forward to working on at Schon&Co?

“Truthfully, I'm looking forward to throwing myself into a wide variety of different projects and campaigns.

“Rather than having one set role doing the same thing day-in, day-out, I can’t wait to work across multiple clients and learn from a wide range of businesses and sectors.

“It’s been my dream to move from in-house to an agency, and now I've genuinely had my dream come true!”

It’s fantastic to have Emily on the Schon&Co team, we can’t wait for her to get settled in. You can contact Emily at emily@schonandco.com or on LinkedIn.
